Tutorial: How to make an animated icon

Okay, so this tutorial is for the people who wants to learn how to make an animated icon from a video.

You need Adobe ImageReady to do this. I used Adobe ImageReady CS, but I guess you can use earlier and newer versions of it too.

Videos in .mp4 (video ipod) format will not work. Videos in .avi and .mov format does work. I suggest that you go to www.zamzar.com if you need to convert something to the right format.

The first thing you need to do is open ImageReady. Then make sure that 'animation' is marked like you can see in this screenshot:

1. File > Open > Whatever video you want to make an icon of.
For my icon I chose a clip from the Panic! At The Disco DVD.

2. When you open your video this box should pop up. Mark the 'Selected Range Only'. Then you can find the part of the video you want to make an icon of, and mark it. Hold down your Shift key while marking that part. You see those arrows I've marked in this screenshot? I've found them useful since they mark one and one picture at a time. I don't know how that is on a PC, but it works on Mac. So you can just hold down the Shift key, select the part of the video you want to use by moving the arrow, then let go of the Shift key and click 'OK'.

3. The next step would be to select the crop tool in your toolbar. When you've done that, type 100 in both boxes in the top left corner (look at the screenshot). Now, drag your arrow across your animation/the one picture that's showing in a separate window, and select how much of the area you want to be shown in your icon. Then click on the 'v' button in the top right corner to crop it.

You will now see that it's down to icon size.
The animation window at the bottom shows all the different pictures from your video, and everything that'll be a part of your animated icon. You can press play to see how it will look, but it will show itself a lot slower than it really is. You can see in my screenshot that all of the pictures is set to '0,06 sec' which has been done automatically. When importing videos like this, the speed that is automatically set should be right, so you don't have to worry about that. If you find out that one or more pictures is unnecessary, you can just mark that/those picture(s) in the animation window and click on the little trashcan you can see at the bottom of that window.

When you think you are ready to save it, do as in the following screenshot:

Name your icon and save it wherever you want it to be saved.

Aaand.. you're done!

And by just removing five pictures/frames from the animation window, I get this:

Note: Mac users won't be able to view their animation anywhere besides ImageReady (as far as I know), and as I've already said; the speed is shown considerably slower than it really is. But as soon as you put it online you'll see it as it should be.

I hope this made sense and that it'll help you on your way to making animated icons like these. Experiment, explore and HAVE FUN!
